Reformatted and decreased slightly in size to ensure easily portability in the field, the 20th edition provides a quick reference for information including clinical signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, incubation periods, and measures for prevention and control.

Some previous subsections have been changed to stand-alone chapters due to their increasing relevance. Examples include Japanese Encephalitis, West Nile Virus Disease, Rift Valley Fever, Rotavirus Infection, Norovirus Infection, SARS, MERS, and other Coronavirus infections. Other chapters have been merged, reorganized or renamed. Cancers linked to communicable diseases have now been included in the chapter with the relevant infection. Two new chapters have been added: one on noma and the other on communicable diseases at the animal/human interface.
